NIAD-UE UNIVERSITY QUALITY ASSURANCE FORUM 2014

Toward  a  Multidimensional  Approach:
How  We  Use  Ranking  Indicators?

Friday, 1st August 2014
Hitotsubashi Hall, Tokyo
13:00 - 17:00

*venue opens at 12:00
*reception is held at 17:30 - 18:30

  • OVERVIEW

With the present being hailed as an age of policy inducement, various policies and achievement objectives are floated, and rankings and indicators frequently come up in conversation as a means of demonstration. However, there is concern that the objects of rankings and indicators are overemphasized in certain fields.

Meanwhile, a policy of functional differentiation of universities has long been indicated, but one could argue that universities have not fully defined how they will establish and put into practice strategies while leveraging their individualities and strengths. What kind of information and support tools do universities need?

In this forum we will overview policy trends in Japan and the ranking and indicators used in policy formation. We will also introduce the U-Multirank that has been pioneered in the EU. This will be followed by discussion of what is needed for universities to autonomously clarify their standing and to move forward with strategic plans as well as how this data can be used in higher education policy.
