On Aug. 19th (Thu), NIAD-UE hosted the 'The 2nd Japan-China-Korea Quality Assurance Council' which was held at the National Center of Science Building, Tokyo. This Council was organized in collaboration with the Higher Education Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education (HEEC) and the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) on the basis of an agreement to promote the quality-assured exchange among universities reached during the Trilateral Summit Meeting in October last year, with a view to fostering cooperation on quality assurance. Following the 1st Council held in March this year (in Bangkok, Thailand), where the implementation of joint projects was agreed upon, the Council discussed details of the project and a schedule for the Council's future activities.

The council was attended by President Shin-ichi Hirano of NIAD-UE; Director-General Ji Ping of HEEC; and Director Lee Young Ho of the KCUE Center for University Accreditation and other main staffs from respective parties. Additionally, other observers attended, including: Mr. Shigeharu Kato, Deputy Director-General (for the Higher Education Bureau) and Mr. Kazutaka Nishikawa, Senior Specialist for University Evaluation of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and other government officials from China and Korea. In the discussions, it was agreed that the three parties will launch three project groups (PGs) to implement joint projects concerning quality assurance, and that each parties will be given a responsibility to lead one of these PGs. The Council also decided to hold the next meeting in Beijing this fall and the following meeting in Seoul, as well as to identify the results of the activities of all the PGs during the meeting to be held in Tokyo next year. The three parties agreed to present the results to the 'International Symposium on Exchange among Universities with Quality Assurance in East Asia Region', which is planned for the first quarter of 2011 hosted by the governments of Japan, China, and Korea.

This Council is working in close collaboration under the concept of 'CAMPUS Asia', which was set up at the '1st Japan-China-Korea Committee for Promoting Exchange and Cooperation among Universities', held by the governments of Japan, China, and Korea in April this year. With the support of these three governments, the Council continues to have its meetings in tight coordination among the three institutions.
